I went to Iceland once in 2007 for the unveiling and inaugural lighting of Yoko Ono's IMAGINE PEACE tower on Videy island, just off Reykjavik. The base of the tower is a white stone 'wishing well', engraved with the words 'imagine peace' in 24 languages. The well uses prisms to project 15 searchlights into the sky, forming a tower of light. It stays lit every year from October 9th (Lennon's birthday) to December 8th (date of his death). Yoko chose Iceland because of its clean, geothermal energy. My sister and I were just talking about it yesterday, how it was one of the most magical and touching experiences of our lives (picture an intimate, candlelit gathering on a bluff overlooking the sea, with an Icelandic children's choir singing Beatles songs in the background. Teary yet?) and I wake up to another invitation to this year's lighting...
Ask and you shall receive, right?
Last time was a surprise trip, decided last minute in the south of France. My dad was invited but couldn't go, so he asked us to go in his place. Coming from California to St Tropez and expecting to go right back, I had only packed cute flouncy sundresses and things of the sort. You can say we were a bit unprepared, in every sense of the term. Everything was a guessing game: language, exchange rate (which led to some dangerous shopping), directions... But we made it through two days in Reykjavik and left with the best memories.
Parting shot, one of the only photos from last time, the Blue Lagoon...
